LED Lights Capture the Movements of a Violinist’s Bow

Through the use of some strategically-placed LED lights and a long exposure, photographer Stephen Orlando captured these images of a string instrument bow’s movement through space while the violinist or violist plays through a classical composition.

The light trails that are painted as a result are reminiscent of an undulating topographical map or electrical waves of sound emanating from the musician — a visual representation of the auditory sensation. Even more impressively, these images were not manipulated in Photoshop, so what exists is a purer record of the performer’s movement.
