Cateura, Paraguay is a community built on the site of a landfill. A slum isn’t a place you would think to find much hope, let alone a way for the children living there to express themselves through music. A violin costs more than a house where they live. Though as we’ve seen before, it only takes the vision of re-purposing something previously seen as garbage into an instrument of expression and beauty.
The Recycled Orchestra is an orchestra that performs with instruments made out of trash. It is proof that, as the upcoming picture landfillharmonic puts it, “Creative and simple solutions can bring powerful social transformation to the poorest communities.” The re-purposing of trash by thoughtful individuals in Cateura managed to improve the quality of life for dozens of children living there.
