The Virgins arrived a few years ago with a song, Rich Girls, whose funky, sweaty, catchy vibe seemed to perfectly sum up the mood of downtown NY. They followed that up with their first full-length, a record that ended up defining my entire summer. Then, they seemingly disappeared. Now, they’re back — or at least frontman Donald Cumming has brought back some form of the band, and they’ve released a new track called “Island Girl.”
Is the rough, garage-y, cavernous sound of this track a harbinger of things to come? Either way, it’s a nice, mellow jam that holds a lot of promise. Also, the band is playing tonight at the Tribeca Grand, part of an afterparty for the opening of the Morrison Hotel Kurt Cobain exhibition.
