Chinese Storybooks

March 03, 2010

This is decidedly non-tech/style, but I’m feeling nostalgic today and happened to stumble across some storybooks that had been a huge part of my childhood. These are all bonafide classics, though you might not be as familiar with them as, say, Where the Wild Things Are (now out on DVD/Blu-Ray, by the way!) or Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. Possible movies in the making?

Throw hipster parties with Lecci Mixer

March 03, 2010

Everyone is a DJ and anybody can scratch. If you have a laptop, grab a copy of Virtual DJ, or Traktor, do some auto beat matching and you’d be DJing live in 10 minutes. Or if you are old school like us, shell out a couple hundred dollars to get some CD or vinyl decks, and you can scratch like these (annoying) 5 year old YouTube sensations in a couple days. But if you don’t got the dough, nor a MacBook, but still have that iPod Shuffle, then may we suggest the Lecci Mini MP3 Mixer ($29.99 from AC Gears), and you can still invite all your hipster friends for a proper party. It’s true you won’t be able to scratch with Lecci, but at least you can crossfade in real time without the assistance of some expensive computer programs. Old fashioned like the good old days, beat matching and crossfading all with your own ears. Just remember to invest the money saved in a couple more bottles of Vodka and your guests won’t even notice when you screw up.

Flying Lotus – Cosmogramma

March 01, 2010

Flying Lotus is one of those names that sounds equally familiar and un-familiar. By this point, it’s tough to imagine a producer this talented slipping past anyone’s radar. You may have caught his music on Adult Swim before without noticing, which is one of those nicely odd ways that pop culture sometimes finds a way to disseminate cool stuff out into the world. But, at its essence, the guy makes the kind of music that you’d hear about from your best friend’s cool older brother or something like that.

Take a minute to familiarize (or re-familiarize) yourself with the man and the myth, ’cause homeboy has a new record coming out. Dubbed a ‘glorious space opera’ by his label, Warp Records, Cosmogramma, coming out in May and including a collaboration with Thom Yorke, is gonna be huge.

Bicycle Tire Wallets

February 26, 2010

Wired’s Gadget Lab points us to these wallets from Wikkerink Design that are made out of recycled bike tires, look great, and can easily hold the shattered pieces of all your broken dreams. Sorry, that last part is coming from me personally. Maybe you’re one of the privileged few with a “credit card,” paper “money,” or some verifiable form of “U.S. identification,” in which case you’ll find slots for all of that, too.
