OC x Fjällräven
August 16, 2010Opening Ceremony knows how to add just a little spice for the downtown crowd. This recent team-up with Swedish outdoor/mountaineering brand Fjällräven is good for both – a little splash of youthful color to brighten up an old classic, and a trusted brand to lend extra credibility. Plus, they look great – it’s back-to-school season, after all, and you’ll need something to carry those books in.
Adventure Time with Finn and Jake
August 12, 2010If you haven’t been watching this yet, you should be. Trust me.
A Swedish Love Story
August 11, 2010Immediately after hearing about a new Owen Pallett EP coming out in September titled “A Swedish Love Story,” I see also that the nostalgic-sounding Summer Camp have released a video for their single “Round the Moon,” featuring beautiful, throwback footage taken from the 1970 film “En kärlekshistoria.” In English, it translates as “A Swedish Love Story.” Enjoy!
Watch Yoshimito Nara at Work
August 11, 2010In New York, The Park Avenue Armory will play host to Yoshimito Nara from August 23-27 where, between the hours of 4 and 7 pm, those in attendance can watch the artist at work in the studio. Nara’s work is pioneering and his punk rock Asian influence has been impossible to miss these last few years. The time is certainly ripe, both for this and for his career retrospective which will open at the Asia Society on September 9th.

Nature Sound Mixer
August 10, 2010This website found me in the middle of a very busy day, so now, after a few minutes of tinkering, I’m listening to waves crashing against the shore while seagulls and whales cry out and a fire crackles in the distance. Yeah, I know, maybe it makes me an old man. I’m okay with that.
If you, on the other hand, are not going for a feeling of tranquility, but do still want to listen to nature sounds, one of the most popular sound compositions currently on the site is called LemurBeachMating and will probably meet every one of your weird needs.
Ed Templeton and Mark Borthwick for Superheadz
August 09, 2010Superheadz has collaborated with some of the art world’s best and brightest to release limited edition versions of their wildly successful Digital Harinezumi 2++ video camera. I’m definitely looking forward to the Ed Templeton and Mark Borthwick models shown above, both of which will include original videos shot using the digital harinezumi by each model’s respective artist. Both have been produced in limited quantities, so act fast when you spot them. Keep your eyes on our shop…I’m hoping we get a few of these soon.
Donny Miller’s Slip-Up for Vans
August 09, 2010Nothing is as it seems in this short video advertising Donny Miller’s shoe for Vans. The shoe is called the Slip-Up, and rightfully so, with a lifelike lace-up print on a slip-on shoe, and this clip shows off the double-take effect of Miller’s art so well.
Spotted on Valet Mag.
Kanye West – Power
August 06, 2010Kanye West’s new video for the trunk-rattling, King Crimson-sampling Power is fascinating. Billed as a “moving painting,” what it really reminds me of is Robert Wilson’s VOOM portraits, taken to the Nth degree in typical Kanye style.
Wilson’s video ‘portraits’ involved celebrities such as Isabella Rossellini, Robert Downey, Jr., and Brad Pitt, and really calls for a dark gallery and large screen in order for the odd combination of unsettling contexts and creepy, found-sound-type noise collages to be truly appreciated, but you won’t need any such dedication to enjoy Kanye’s half-serious, half-self-deprecating take on the genre.
Chromeo – Don’t Turn the Lights On
August 06, 2010The new video for Chromeo’s Don’t Turn the Lights On is such a smart use of simple techniques that it’s instantly memorable. Leaving aside the fact that the song is one hell of a funky electro-jam, the video itself is captivating. It’s directed by Keith Schofield, who was also responsible for this hilarious campaign for Diesel that had taken porn scenes and placed them in Safe-for-Work contexts; just another great example of his perfect, wacky touch.
Megazord
August 05, 2010Christian Oldham is an artist and musician who goes by the name Megazord. His Tumblr is insane, a childlike mind expanding and unraveling, and the art is much the same way. He’s an 18-year-old product of the Internet and he crams all the wacky energy of the web into his work, including a couple of mind-melting music videos.
Layer upon layer upon layer – it’s a visual representation of how fried we’ve been by information overload, but also how we’re being forced to adapt to a weird new world. This is the World Wide Web showing us its world through the eyes of its own son.
