GQ’s latest in their 10 Essentials series featuring Gildas Loaëc of Paris’ Kitsuné fashion/record label is worth reading for a number of reasons, not least of which because it includes one of our shop favorites, the beautiful headphones made by AIAIAI. If you’re unfamiliar with Mr. Loaëc’s storied past, just know that his time spent as part of the Daft Punk team and years spent working as a jetsetting DJ make his shout-out to the headphone a ringing endorsement. Plus, it’s part of a short list that also includes his Daft Punk commemorative gold album and a Swarovski crystal. Fancy company to keep indeed.

I’ll always love certain retro items, and an old-fashioned cassette tape is absolutely one of them. The AirCassette is a music-playing app for the iPhone that takes you back to the days of mixtapes and taping favorite songs off the radio to listen to them over and over under the covers. The tape spins as your music plays and all feels right with the world again.
As it turns out, David Lynch doesn’t listen exclusively to Chris Isaak and Roy Orbison ballads the way I’d pictured. The filmmaker has been collaborating with music engineer ‘Big’ Dean Hurley on his debut musical album Crazy Clown Time and now they’ve put together a mix of some of their recent musical obsessions for The Stool Pigeon. You can stream it above – there’s no shortage of bluesy-rock in the form of Gary Clarke, Jr. and The Kills along with some left-turns like James Blake’s beautiful, wobbly ‘Limit to Your Love.’

Carsten Höller’s career retrospective Experience just opened at The New Museum and I’ve got three words for you: Giant. F’ing. Slide.
As part of the themes Höller explored revolving around childhood, love, safety, the future and doubt, he created slide installations, one of which is part of this retrospective. It’s 102 feet long and takes you from the 4th to the 2nd floor of The New Museum — sounds like a blast! If you’re into different types of thrills-slash-chills, try taking a ride on the carousel exhibit or immersing yourself in the slightly more adult ‘clothing-optional’ sensory-deprivation tank.

Get ready, get amped, hold on to any and all of your hats; we’re excited for this one. The MakerBot Thing-O-Matic is a device that ‘prints’ 3D objects, creating you a copy in thermoplastic right before your eyes, and AC Gears is proud to be the first to offer it in a retail store. The unveiling happens Friday, Nov. 4th so, of course, we’re throwing a party. RSVP now on our Facebook page and come get a first look!

Have you ever heard of a ponycorn? Going ahead with the assumption you haven’t, they’re best explained as “the best thing in the world, ‘cause they’re like ponies AND unicorns.” That’s the description straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak – or, rather, from “Cassie, age 5,” the young brains behind Sissy’s Magical Ponycorn Adventure, an online point-and-click game created with the help of Cassie’s dad (“Ryan, age 33” as the game’s credits put it). Cassie voices the main character, Sissy, with great aplomb as she goes off traipsing through rainbow doors in search of ponycorns. As you lead her through, Sissy comments on the characters she runs into, including a goat on a pole (“That’s weird”), a dinosaur whom she proceeds to turn into a mouse (“You’re a mouse now. How do you like them apples?”), and an evil lemon (don’t ask).
Bonus: as heartwrenchingly cute as the game itself is the story behind the game (with pictures of Cassie, proud dad Ryan and the rest of the family!).

For those of you who’ve followed Sam Sifton’s brief tenure as the head of the NY Times’ Dining section, you already know he made minor waves for approaching the whole thing in a little looser, more downtown way than Bruni before him – in no way more apparent than his penchant for dropping a musical reference or five, from the Ramones to Jay-Z and back again. As posted on Eater NY, click over to watch a quick compilation highlighting some of Sifton’s hits. You’ll be missed.
