A founding member of Fluxus and the concrete poetry movement, Emmett Williams (1925-2007) made several performances and poems that stand today as defining gems of those genres. Among them is the book-length concrete poem Sweethearts, first published by Something Else Press (where Williams was editor in chief) in 1968, and back in print for the first time, still sporting its classic cover by Marcel Duchamp… Richard Hamilton described Sweethearts as being “to concrete poetry as Wuthering Heights is to the English novel… compelling in its emotional scope, readable, a sweetly heartfelt, jokey, crying, laughing, tender expression of love.” (via amazon)
I am so SO excited that this is back in print. The book is brilliant, playful and romantic – here’s an excerpt from Frank Chimero‘s entry about the book.
The letters maintain the same spacing in every word on each page, lending the volume a flipbook dimension that Williams enhances by organizing the text to read backwards, so that the reader can flip the book with her or his left hand (thus the front cover is on the back, and vice versa).
“art is totally impractical, and you never know if the result is the best result. Anytime somebody makes anything they should be congratulated because it’s such chaos, to be able to position yourself at all to produce something.” – Cory Arcangel

I Want You To Want Me by Jonathan Harris and Sep Kamvar
[People] talk about themselves in 200 words and say the most important things about themselves, so it is very fertile ground for building a mosaic of humanity.
Jonathan Harris is another one of my personal heros. This installation is titled “I Want you to Want Me” and was commissioned by the MOMA for Valentines Day, 2008. The project was presented on a 56″ touch screen and the little balloons are profiles pulled from the various dating sites on the web. Read the project’s mission statement here.
I Want You To Want Me explores the search for love
and self in the world of online dating.
It’s not valentines day but I’m getting post-summer blues. New York City feel serene after the hurricane; we’re all still here, looking for someone.
Accessories made of concrete? Sounds like something from a dystopian novel. This office supply set designed by Sung-Ching Chang features a stapler, calculator, tape dispenser and pen holder, which form a miniature city. The designs are not only dashing, but great fun as well. The stapler can create emoticon imprints, the tape dispenser has a little roulette of activity suggestions, and the pen holder will shoot the adorable eraser flying when a pen is placed in a random slot. All this can be done with the soundtrack from the calculator which translates your calculations into music. I can imagine playing with the pen holder all day like it’s the pop up pirate game from my childhood.
“Pomme is an image pairing game where the goal is to make the best combination of images. Each round, a new “match” image appears, and a different player gets to be judge. Players select the best image from their hand to accompany the match.”
Designer Gas Masks by Diddo Vilema. Look great in the summer while you stroll around the streets of NYC! Avoid the offensive urine-garbage-BO smell! You might get a bit sweaty but it’ll look so cool.
