Chromatic Typewriter

The Chromatic Typewriter is a creation of Tyree Callahan‘s, his entry into the 2012 West Prize competition. Callahan created a ‘painting device’ by modifying a vintage typewriter, replacing the keys with color pads and opening up our imaginations to new ways of creating beautiful art.

Super New York City

Seen on Selectism — and not as if New York needs to seem any more like an adventure, but at least this print by Jesse Eisemann renders the city as the fun, jump-on-Yoshi-and-spit-out-some-turtle-shells-type adventure, effectively distracting us from the reality of our day-to-day “did that bum just spit on me?” adventure. The print is available at Imagekind.

David Lynch & ‘Big’ Dean Hurley’s Mixtape

As it turns out, David Lynch doesn’t listen exclusively to Chris Isaak and Roy Orbison ballads the way I’d pictured. The filmmaker has been collaborating with music engineer ‘Big’ Dean Hurley on his debut musical album Crazy Clown Time and now they’ve put together a mix of some of their recent musical obsessions for The Stool Pigeon. You can stream it above – there’s no shortage of bluesy-rock in the form of Gary Clarke, Jr. and The Kills along with some left-turns like James Blake’s beautiful, wobbly ‘Limit to Your Love.’

The New Museum is an adult playground

Carsten Höller’s career retrospective Experience just opened at The New Museum and I’ve got three words for you: Giant. F’ing. Slide.

As part of the themes Höller explored revolving around childhood, love, safety, the future and doubt, he created slide installations, one of which is part of this retrospective. It’s 102 feet long and takes you from the 4th to the 2nd floor of The New Museum — sounds like a blast! If you’re into different types of thrills-slash-chills, try taking a ride on the carousel exhibit or immersing yourself in the slightly more adult ‘clothing-optional’ sensory-deprivation tank.

Adam Kimmel x David Blaine (plus a few Great Whites)

Last year, NYC menswear designer Adam Kimmel chatted with magician/performance artist David Blaine in Interview Magazine. During their talk, there was mention of a video piece they’d just finished collaborating on that involved Blaine floating deep in shark-infested waters without the aid of any pesky contraptions like, say, a cage. That’s right — Blaine was free-floating as 20-some Great Whites circled him, 3 or 4 at a time, all while wearing Kimmel’s clothing, including a full tuxedo, and performing acts like eating a banana and smoking a cigar. The fruits of their labor are now online in the form of a short film. Enjoy.
