Dubstep Class

As easy as 1, 2, 3, here’s an animated tutorial so you, too, can write a ‘filthy dubstep banger.’ Silly little student trying to crawl away at the end…you can’t escape the Mohawk Dubstep Squirrel that easily!

Tanlines – “All of Me”

The new single from Tanlines has been kicking around my brain-space for the past week — enjoy it, and the very satisfying accompanying video directed by Julian Baratt of The Mighty Boosh fame. Dripping with Lynchian flavor, it’s the perfect dark foil for the song’s warm pep.

60 Seconds Left – Dirty Beaches

The 60 Seconds Left video features on Pitchfork are sometimes silly, sometimes slow, sometimes intimate moments with musicians. This most recent, with Dirty Beaches’ Alex Zhang Hungtai (he of the slick pompadour and Roy Orbison-cool tunes) gives a glimpse of a young entertainer who likes to laugh and knows his way around a bottle of beer. I still need to work on that lighter opening technique!

Chromatics – Kill For Love

After being introduced to a wider audience through the popular Drive soundtrack, Chromatics have been prepping a new release, and now it’s here — a huge, 17-song album that’s available now through iTunes, with a double-vinyl release supposedly on the way. Above is a video for one of the tracks from Kill For Love, one of a series of promo videos directed by Alberto Rossini.

Manhattan Borough President visits MakerBot

We’re happy to see MakerBot making new fans! The L Magazine shares a video of Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer taking a tour of the MakerBot factory in Brooklyn and explaining his excitement over the prospect of small-scale, high-tech local businesses pumping new life into the neighborhood.

“(We’ve gotta start) recognizing ‘what’s the next generation of mom-and-pop?’…this is an industry that’s on the move, and New York has to continue to be on the cutting edge.”

We couldn’t agree more. Haven’t seen the Makerbot in action yet? Come visit us at the store and take a gander!

Grimes – “Oblivion”

By all accounts, Claire Boucher, with her musical project Grimes, seems to be shaping up into this year’s most-adored new punk chanteuse — punk in spirit, certainly, if not purely in her music, which shoves bouncy 80s synth-pop and Cyndi Lauper-ish melodies through some dark, industrial corridors to create something that feels altogether fresh. Check out the video for her single “Oblivion,” which has a visceral sort of generation-defining force that some are already comparing to “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

Kid Koala Space Cadet Headphone Concert

As the kind of person (old? crotchety?) for whom the idea of a concert where everyone is sitting/laying down nearly comatose usually sounds far more appealing than the typical standing-room-only setup, this Kid Koala headphone tour had me at ‘hello.’

Coming to Fort Greene on April 3rd and 4th, it’s an “immersive headphone concert experience” that will have the audience in “inflatable ‘space pods,’ listening to the show through individual headphone systems” all while Kid Koala plays through the score to Space Cadet, the graphic novel he released last year.

Before the shows, you can also check out a gallery installation featuring a bunch of Space Cadet-related stuff (“interactive Music Spaceship Console,” “Space Cadet Soundtrack Jukebox,” etc.). Tickets are still available here.
