There is a movement going on in the US and around the world, especially noticeable if you browse Youtube for music. Some call it “chillhop,” I call it “meditative chill music.” Another word to loosely categorize these downbeat, somewhat jazzy, electronic tunes is Vaporwave. They are meditative, because like meditation, they take you to a different realm of mental state, regardless of what’s happening around you. It is like maintaining a calm state of mind, in the middle of the storm and so you can still navigate lucidly and positively.
This is not a careless detachment to the problems we face as humans, but a dogged positivity focused to bring good to the world, despite how difficult it may seem. We are featuring quite a few artists from the chillhop/vaporwave genre these days, because that’s the music we are playing in our very own oasis in NYC (the AC Gears store). You could say, that’s the state of mind we are in, and would like to share with our patrons and visitors.
Today we have on the roster Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, started from a few guys jamming while attending the University of Maryland in Baltimore, PPPP “brings end-of-the-world enthusiasm to their high-energy psychedelic funk.” Angels with rainbow pigeon wings (and tripping?). PPPP is best known with their unstoppable drive to tour, sharing their funky American rock with audience from music festival to festival.
So the Horizon reminds me of Free Bird, a journey that keeps unfolding as it rocketed. The guitar solo isn’t as mind blowing as compared if you attempt to replay it in Guitar Hero 2, but it is fairly mind blowing nonetheless when the climax of the song goes to the main chorus of “Celebrate Life.” Seriously, celebrate life we should! At a time when there can be so much to complain and worry about, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong is what we need. Who wouldn’t want to see Pigeons Playing Ping Pong? We would all gather around and have a great time. That’s how things should be.
Live it up is groovy and you really get a good sense of that funky rock that is both peculiar and refreshing. With that hint of EDM in the backdrop but the all American rock too, well, maybe we should all stop categorizing things and just enjoy it. With that, I am tossing in a bonus: Penguins by Pigeons Playing Ping Pong. If you don’t enjoy it, you need to pick up meditation. If you do, then you are already practicing.
