The phone booth is a relic from a more simple time, when we committed phone numbers to memory and children carried spare quarters instead of iPhones for emergencies. While the few remaining booths are a quaint reminder of that past, they no longer serve much purpose.

In an effort to reclaim the disused booths, Benedetto Bufalino and Benoit Deseille re-purposed them as beautifully illuminated fish tanks. The first of these aquarium phone booths appeared in 2007 at Lyon’s Fete Des Lumieres and have since shown up at festivals all over Europe. Their most recent appearance was at the Lumiere Festival in Durham, UK.
