Bicycle Tire Wallets

Wired’s Gadget Lab points us to these wallets from Wikkerink Design that are made out of recycled bike tires, look great, and can easily hold the shattered pieces of all your broken dreams. Sorry, that last part is coming from me personally. Maybe you’re one of the privileged few with a “credit card,” paper “money,” or some verifiable form of “U.S. identification,” in which case you’ll find slots for all of that, too.

Digital Harinezumi at The New Museum

Dear Harinezumi Fans,

So here’s an exclusive event at New York City’s New Museum we’ve just been notified by the good people of Superheadz. We’ve already RSVPed, so be sure you do the same too. The New Museum will feature some fine art works done through the Imperfect Eyes of the Harinezumi 1 and 2. It’s going to be a great art collective and a good time to socialize and meet with other DH fans. You heard it first from GEDDEM! Rock on!

ToneMatrix, online synthesizer

From the lab of André Michelle, a flashcoder working from Berlin, let me introduce you to this week’s new timewaster. Although, can it really be considered wasted time if you’re doing something that seems, in a way, productive (making music)? Do you think my boss will buy that level of bull hockey; not only buy it, but cheer, guffaw, clap me on the back and reward my creative initiative with the offer of a pay raise or introduction into some dubious-sounding sort of profit-sharing program? Yes? No? Outlook Not So Good?

If you like that (have you clicked over yet? Do it! Click the buttons! Hear the blips! Taste the rainbow!), you’ll love this – a flash simulation of a vintage Roland drum machine. Oh, and by the way, I’m sorry to drop something so addictive on you in the middle of what seems to be a nationwide firing frenzy. Disclaimer: check this out, click around, make bleep-bloop tunes to beat the band; but please, by all means, do it discreetly. DISCREETLY, I SAY.

Kehinde Wiley x Puma

Picture-16

We’ve been keeping an eye on artist Kehinde Wiley who’s been attracting some much-deserved attention lately for bringing a fresh look to African-American representations in art. Puma was quick to get in good with that talent, commissioning Wiley to create artworks and provide inspiration for a limited-edition shoes/clothing line in conjunction with this year’s World Cup held in South Africa.

A very cool part of this collaborative effort is a limited-edition uniform meant to be shared by all three African teams competing in the World Cup as a symbol of unity. Watch the clip from Puma above and catch an interview with Wiley at PSFK.

The Magical Mystery Chambers

Did you catch this record when the news broke? Here’s the thing – I know I’m in the minority for not ever getting into The Grey Album that Danger Mouse put together, which was kind of the explosion of this whole Internet mashup phenomenon. While the color-theme concept was pretty clevel, The Black Album just isn’t a classic-status record. As a result, the whole thing fell a little flat, like it was mismatched. “Why don’t you mash with an album your own size?” But Wu-Tang’s 36 Chambers? Now, that’s more like a hip-hop equivalent to The Beatles in the sense of full-on game-changers at the peak of their creative and commercial success. And the producer who dreamed this up just KILLS it.

Seriously, this record’s no gimmick. Tom Caruano, the producer, did something extraordinary with the Beatles samples to the point where it’s tough to single out individual songs at all. These are compositions in their own right, so it’s a shame that Capitol Records has pulled the plug. Yep, you used to be able to get it straight from the source, for free. Because of the sticky issue of Fair Use and Copyright Infringement, we’re left with this.

Do yourself a favor, though, and do a little creative web searching. It’s still out there, and it still wants to be heard.

Adidas Augmented Reality Pack

adidas-originals-augmented-reality-sneakers-7

Adidas is getting into augmented reality in a unique way — taking some of their most iconic shoes and stamping them with an AR code on the tongue. Holding these shoes up to a web camera will them cause the 3d Adidas Neighborhood to bloom right out of the shoe. Just…I don’t know, watch the video.

As time goes on, Adidas will be releasing games specifically tailored for this AR Pack. Use your shoe as a phone? Running game like you used to do with Nintendo PowerPad (known in Japan as Family Trainer)? Maybe I don’t understand how this is actually supposed to work. I guess I’ll just watch the Youtube video again and keep quiet. As for you, click over to the Adidas site for a preview of the AR experience. Download a special code and go to town. As it says on the site, however, the only way to get the full nine yards is to grab a pair of the shoes.
