I’ve been really depressed making this thing because I think people are expecting it to be a lot bigger than it actually is.
- Ty Evans
You’ve seen the U.N.K.L.E. video put together with some of this footage. Now, sit down with directors Ty Evans and Spike Jonze along with some of the legends (Guy Mariano, Eric Koston, Marc Johnson) as they throw heart and soul into Fully Flared, a project that was four years in the making.

Exploding generators, fake walls, a giant firebomb and, the bread-and-butter, a whole host of genius skate parts that bend and break the rules. Ty, I don’t think you needed to worry so much. Thanks to Secret Forts for pointing us to Epicly Later’d.

A look back at the recent past: Radiohead’s video for ‘House of Cards’ off of their latest record In Rainbows was created without the use of a single camera. Instead, director James Frost utilized Geometric Informatics and Velodyne LIDAR to capture, with the use of 64 rotating lasers, 3D images that sync up with the lazy, haunting track. Watch the video first, then discover the process here.

When Matthew Edelstein stepped away from his full-time gig at Details in 2008 he put his newfound freedom to immediate good use. The blog-style site he created, bare-bones all the way, quickly became a sort of creative safe haven for photographers, models and creative directors itching to escape the controlling arm of a big magazine. While most print publications are struggling to build on their online presence, Contributing Editor is a magazine that exists solely on the screen.

At Contributing Editor, turnaround is quick. Edelstein and his CE partner Ryan Schmidt coordinate with their various contributors to get their work published quickly, infusing the whole project with a youthful energy — from shoots with bands like Young Lords to a look inside the much-photographed Shipley & Halmos office, this is all fun stuff from seasoned veterans getting a chance to do their own thing.

This is hardly the first online-only style/culture publication, but it is defiantly unique in that the site looks like a collection of image scans. Contributing Editor isn’t trying to be a web publication — it’s a publication that just so happens to be on the web. Can we expect much more of the same as everything continues to make its move onto the Internet?

In the blah world of iPhone’s and i-Everything, it’s always refreshing to see a renowned company like Amadana Japan to launch a slightly understated, under-publicized product that emphasizes not only on the aesthetics of things, but the core functionality of things . The new Amadana N-04A for Japan’s Telecom company NTT Docomo, manufactured by NEC, is a super slim slider cellphone that weighs only 112g, and just a little bit over half an inch in thickness.
If you’ve ever landed your hands on an Amadana product, you’d know why people pay “good” (but not outrageous) money for them – sleek, and so well made – alas, the reason why we buy and own things. We have yet gotten the privilege to play with the new N-04A, but from the specs along – music player with SRS Surround Sound output, the core functions of a cellphone – dialing/receiving calls, and the sexy brown Amadana buttons (yes, buttons can be sexy), do make us forget about iPhone and its apps, just a little. Check out NTT Docomo’s Amadana N-04A page.

Thanks to good friend Andy for the knowledge: Defeater, a Boston hardcore band on Bridge 9 Records, includes drummer Andy Reitz, the hard-working and visionary founder of Green Vans.

Like Defeater, are you ready to cruise through the country in a van that smells like french fries while saving both money AND the environment? Watch Reitz explain and demonstrate the concept below in a video featured on Boldfacers.

The idea for Green Vans sprung from a simple desire to save some money. Touring bands know that gas is is no light expense when playing towns on a daily basis that are 10 hours apart for months on end. Add in the unfortunate reality that most working bands are forced to criss-cross the nation in some pretty rag-tag vehicles that don’t get much to the gallon and you can start seeing the world through Reitz’s eyes.
Green Vans offers an economical and eco-conscious solution: diesel vans converted to run on vegetable oil. As a seasoned vet himself, Reitz understands how a tour works, so you can trust Green Vans to come through on their promise to plan out vegetable oil fill-ups for the duration of your rental utilizing a nationwide network of suppliers. In the category of “Things That Are Too Awesome for Life”, this weekend I was able to fulfill my lifelong dream of participating in a grand scale, flash-mob style pillow fight. From 3:00-4:00 on Saturday, my quiet little neighborhood in the financial district exploded into a riot of pillows, feathers, dollar signs, and monopoly money – all under the hugely oversized flag at the New York Stock Exchange. Pictures after the cut – click here for flickr stream.
